We hear the first part, Allegro con brio from L.V. Beethoven ’s Sonata No 21 [“Waldstein”]. It is performed by one of the greatest of the past century: the Russian pianist Emil Gilels. These Beethoven performances cobbled from several 70s DGG releases could not be finer. They are musically and technically from the mind and fingers of a giant. Where the Waldstein can sound a little like a technical exercise or even cartoonish in some hands, Gilels finds the rich nourishment between the myriad of notes. When Emil Gilels died in 1985, he had completed recordings of most but not all of Beethoven's piano sonatas, released here in a nine-disc set. What's here is unimaginably good: superlative recordings of 27 of the 32 canonical sonatas, including the "Pathétique," "Moonlight," "Waldstein," "Appassionata," "Les Adieux," and the majestic Specifically for the "Waldstein" I believe this is by now unquestionably the standard.
